The Extra Precautions Worth Taking Away From Your Own Trusted Network

Most account security habits assume you're connecting from a device and network you trust. Public Wi-Fi and shared devices, at a coffee shop, airport, library, or hotel, remove that assumption, and the specific risks there are different enough to warrant their own set of habits.
On an unsecured public network, it's technically possible for someone else on the same network to intercept unencrypted data you send, or to set up a fake network with a similar name designed to capture your traffic directly. Most modern websites use encryption (look for "https" and a lock icon) that significantly reduces this risk, but it doesn't eliminate every vulnerability, particularly for older apps or unencrypted connections.
What to check: Confirm you're connecting to the legitimate network name (ask staff directly rather than assuming) rather than a similarly named fake network designed to intercept traffic.
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through a secure server, adding a meaningful layer of protection on an untrusted network. It's a reasonable extra precaution for sensitive activity on public Wi-Fi, though it's not a substitute for the other account security habits from the previous lesson.
What to check: If you frequently handle banking or sensitive information on public networks, a reputable VPN service is worth considering as an additional layer, not a replacement for strong passwords and two-factor authentication.
Reading news or browsing general websites on public Wi-Fi carries relatively low risk. Logging into banking, entering payment information, or accessing sensitive accounts carries meaningfully more risk and is worth delaying until you're on a trusted network, or protecting with a VPN if it can't wait.
What to check: Before doing anything sensitive on an unfamiliar network, ask whether it can reasonably wait until you're back on a trusted connection.
Waiting for a flight, Marcus notices two similarly named Wi-Fi networks: "Airport_Free_WiFi" and "Airport_FreeWiFi_5G." Rather than guessing, he asks an airport staff member which one is official, since a fake network mimicking the real one is a known tactic in busy public spaces.
Once connected to the confirmed legitimate network, he browses news and checks a flight status app without concern, but decides his upcoming bill payment can wait until he's home on his own network rather than entering banking credentials over the airport connection.
All public Wi-Fi networks are equally dangerous, so there's no point being careful about which one I join.
Confirming you're on the legitimate network (not a similarly named fake one) meaningfully reduces risk, as does sticking to encrypted (https) sites and avoiding sensitive logins when possible, these specific habits matter, not just a general sense of caution.
Using a VPN makes any activity on public Wi-Fi completely safe.
A VPN adds a meaningful layer of encryption, but it doesn't protect against every risk, such as malware already on a shared device or a phishing attempt delivered through email rather than network interception. It's one part of a broader set of habits, not a complete solution on its own.
It's generally much safer than public Wi-Fi, but it's still worth using a strong, unique router password and keeping your router's firmware updated, since a poorly secured home network carries its own risks.
Cellular data connections are generally more secure than public Wi-Fi by default, so a VPN is less critical there, though some people use one for privacy reasons beyond the security concerns covered in this lesson.
Change the password for that account as soon as you're on a trusted network, monitor the account closely for unusual activity, and enable two-factor authentication if it isn't already active.
